Do I get the copyright to my pictures after our session?
Well, kinda. In these cases, photographers retain the copyright for the photos, but If you choose to purchase a disc of digital files from your session, you’ll be given something called a reproduction and display release. That allows you to print and share your photos with whomever you like, in whatever venue you like! You can’t sell them, though. You also can’t edit them, either.
Where should we have our session?
The answer to this question will vary from photographer to photographer, but I prefer to join you somewhere that’s familiar and comfy to you so that you can relax and have fun! This is especially important for small kids; I usually try to keep the sessions close to home or in a place the kids are already acquainted with. I find that, if we bring kids somewhere new, they’ll tend to ignore their parents (and their super-fun photographer) because of all the new and exciting things to explore! We don’t need a picturesque backdrop to get amazing photos of your family. A good old comfy couch in front of a big window will work, too! I love to start family and kids sessions right at your home, If you don’t feel super comfortable having the session in your abode, I suggest, then, that we choose an outdoor location that the kids are familiar with! Don’t worry too much whether their favorite places seem photogenic – we can make almost any location look amazing in photos!
What time of day should we choose for our session?
For sessions that are grown-ups only- We should start our session 1.5-2 hours before sunset. We’ll get enveloped in yummy golden sunset light! I’m telling you, it’s magic light. People look waaaay gorgeous that time of day. For sessions that include kids- We should get together during the time of day that works best with the schedule of the little ones who will be participating. We want smiley, happy kids, not cranky, sleepy ones, right?
What should we wear to our session?
I know how daunting it can be to try and find the right clothes to get your picture taken in. If you’ve chosen me as a photographer, you have amazing style anyway, so I don’t think you need to worry too much! Hahahahaha! A good rule of thumb for choosing an outfit is to pick something that fits in with your normal, everyday style, but just pump it up a notch. For ladies, you could go ahead and wear your favorite black shirt, but add some fun jewelry. Bust out those bright red shoes! Layered clothing looks particularly rockin’ in photos; you could wear that black shirt, but have a green tank top peeking out at the neckline, and suddenly you look like a model! You could even bring several options to show me on the day of your session and I could help you pick just the right thing to wear. I think the most important thing to remember is that your party doesn’t necessarily have to match exactly, but if you coordinate the style and color palette of your clothes, you can’t really go wrong. For maternity sessions, you don’t have to wear something skin tight- just remember to wear something that comes closer to your body underneath your baby belly! Tops that fall away from the body have a propensity to look a little tent-like, even on the fittest figures!
What will our session be like?
I like to take photos of people in environments they’re comfortable in, in clothing they’re comfortable in, and doing things they’re comfortable doing. I think it’s easier to capture the essence of who someone really is if they’re not nervous and trying to flash a fake smile every time I pose them and bark “SAY CHEESE!”. That being said, I’ll usually spend 1-2 hours joking with you, acting a little crazy, and taking your picture.
How long after the session to we have to wait to see our pictures!
2 weeks or less, baby! Once they’re finished, you’ll generally see your photos pop up in a blog post and in your online gallery (in the “Store” section of the website) at the same time! I’ll notify you via email as soon as they’re ready!
Do you take a studio portraits? You know, with lighting and backdrops and all that jazz?
Although I refer to my office space as a studio, it does not actually include a portraiture studio set up. I prefer to capture images in more casual, natural settings. I think people end up looking more like themselves when we shoot in places they feel comfortable. We can however, spend some time during your session more neutral location to loosely mimic that clean look of studio portraits. You won’t ever see me with lights, reflectors, and tripods, though. While they are invaluable photography tools, I’ve found that when I’m lugging all that gear around, it’s hard for y’all to feel at ease!
