Graduate : Sam 2009

Meet Sam.

So, these have been hanging around on my hard drive for awhile, just waiting for the perfect time to reveal themselves! And I think a cold, snowy winter day is just right for reminiscing about fall. Remember grass? Remember green? Remember warmth?

I met Sam at a skate park in Worthington to shoot his senior pictures. To be completely forthright, I have to admit that Sam wasn’t really stoked about the idea of striking poses and smiling pretty for the camera. That is a common opinion amongst teenage guys, which I respect wholeheartedly. So, rather than doing the normal senior portrait stuff, I asked Sam to tell me some of the raunchiest jokes he’s heard at his high school. Honestly, I didn’t really know what I was in for, but we ended up with some really genuine expressions in really genuine situations. And that’s the whole point, isn’t it? To capture seniors just the way they are before their world explodes and they start changing faster than you can say “college acceptance letters”.

Melodic Baker’s Dozen

I decided to compile a sweeping list of my favorite songs from female musicians in and around 2008. So, a lot of these weren’t released in 2008, but they colored the aether of my life this past year and thus find their cozy place on this list. Sandra McCracken makes the list twice because she consistently writes the most thoughtful and delicate songs I’ve ever heard. You can find the complete iMix of all these songs here. Buy them all, listen to them all, live along side them and see what beautiful things come of it.

1. Sandra McCracken “Big Blue Sky” from Red Balloon

2. The Wailin’ Jennys “Prairie Town” from Firecracker

3. The Weepies “Citywide Rodeo” from Say I am You

4. Patty Griffin “Heavenly Day” from Children Running Through

5. Rosi Golan “Think of Me” from The Drifter and the Gypsy

6. St. Lola in the Fields “Don’t Say” from Little Breaks/Little Bends

7. Bethany Dillon “My Love Hasn’t Grown Cold” from Imagination

8. Crooked Still “Wind and Rain” from Shaken by a Low Sound

9. Kate Walsh “Talk of the Town” from Tim’s House

10. Sarah Buxton “Stupid Boy” from Almost My Record

11. Grace Potter & The Nocturnals “Apologies” from This is Somewhere

12. Rosie Thomas “Time Goes Away” from If Songs Could Be Held

13. Sandra McCracken “Rock of Ages (When the Day Seems Long)” from The Builder and the Architect

Baby Jack : Not So Baby Anymore

I took my favorite baby, Jack Attack, outside to get some pictures of him looking styling in his electric guitar shirt! Then, after I realized his nose and fingers were frozen solid, I brought him back inside and tried out my new camera on ISO 3200. A little noisy, but honestly life changing for someone who could only go to 800 before the images from my old camera were totally unusable. Ah, the magic of technology…

I find it fitting to end this post with a warning to all my prospective clients. This is what a portrait session with me is REALLY like. Yeah, I know. Better watch out.
